Home away from home
One of the things that always strikes us is the vast array of projects that float through the Amsterdam Yacht Service facilities, from classic sailing superyachts to commercial vessels, tourist boats, and even bridge components.
While Amsterdam Yacht Service has its roots and heritage in steel-hulled fishing vessels and classic Dutch barges, in the last decade the team has made a deliberate shift toward a focus on yacht and superyacht refit and new construction. As part of this shift, the shipyard has invested in a new wood workshop, occupying part of the yard that house the extensive metalworks department.
The wood workshop has been onstream for approaching one year, drawing on the expertise of the core woodworking team who have access to new woodworking machinery that enables them to complete wood restoration for refit projects as well as bespoke cabinetry and other carpentry needs for new-build yacht and superyacht projects. The team’s expertise also means they can both advise customers on the best path forward, and oversee the carpentry aspects of superyacht projects of 70 metres plus.
“We have some key people who really know their stuff, which means we have the tools and the knowledge to take on smaller projects inhouse and, critically, to provide expert guidance as required to assist clients with larger projects,” enthuses Robert Binnekade, managing director of Amsterdam Yacht Service. “The transition toward yachts and superyachts here at AYS meant that we had less need for a large metalworking department but much more use for a wood workshop for our carpenters. It means we can now do interior carpentry and wood restoration, which is the final piece to our holistic, 360-degree refit and new-build yacht offering.”
