Home away from home
One of the things that always strikes us is the vast array of projects that float through the Amsterdam Yacht Service facilities, from classic sailing superyachts to commercial vessels, tourist boats, and even bridge components.
Excellent news reaches us from the Caribbean of a stunning performance by one of our recent projects. A key remit from the vessel’s highly experienced owner for the refit of his 56-metre Perini Navi Panthalassa was to bring her technically up to speed and highly competitive in sailing races. Everyone at AYS was therefore delighted to see Panthalassa win all three races at the recent St Barth’s Bucket Regatta.
Held in Saint Barthélemy since 1986, this year’s boat race was spread over three days in mid-March. Weather conditions meant Panthalassa and the other 25 members of the fleet were faced with light wind racing that brought out the best skills from every single crew member. Light airs are especially challenging for heavy-displacement Perini Navi yachts, who competed against each other on a 12-mile course in the Les Grande Dames category.

Superb performance
Racing with a close rating spread, the largest yachts in the fleet made for a spectacular sight amidst the stunning surroundings. Panthalassa romped home in all three races, finishing over 38 minutes ahead of the runner-up on day 2. Skipper Tristan LeBrun, sailing with the owner and the same crew as at the 2024 regatta, was delighted with this performance:
“Because we have very large, heavy boats in this class and light winds, we focused on minimum manoeuvres,” he told the St Barth’s racing blog (available here along with other reports and great images). “Our goal was to win so we prepared quite a lot and in detail. Last year we learned what to do and what not to do. We race together on the owner’s racing yacht, so we are used to working together many times a year.”

A refit to remember
Conducted in close cooperation with the owner and captain, the refit of Panthalassa was the kind of exciting project that the AYS crew relish. We had to construct a bespoke frame to capture the keel and hoist this 56-metre vessel 3.5 metres above the ground. As well as a wide range of technical upgrades we refitted Panthalassa‘s sail winches and anchor windlasses, stepped the mast and enhanced the teak decks.
Our facilities in Amsterdam were upgraded to ensure this project was a success as you can read here. These investments are already paying dividends for us as a yard and for our clients, with Panthalassa.
